Longlevens Historical Background

a short summary of how Longlevens developed

history book icon Longlevens History

Longlevens is one of Gloucester's largest and most established suburbs, situated to the north-east of the city centre between Kingsholm, Longford, Churchdown and Innsworth. Today it is a predominantly residential community, but its origins lie in a small agricultural settlement surrounded by orchards, market gardens and farmland.

It has grown from a scattering of farms and field strips on the edge of Gloucester into a fully developed 21st-century suburb, shaped by agriculture, gradual housing expansion, and community institutions such as its early "tin tabernacle" church and later schools. Its name likely derives from historic long field divisions known as "Long Elevens," though some link it to Gloucester's Roman heritage."
